Fancy in Franschhoek: Tastings, Food and Art all around

Celebrating something?

A trip to the oh-so gorgeous Franschhoek is always a good idea. If you asked me, it’s a go-to choice for almost any special occasion. There are so many fancy & fun experiences to have.

For our 2nd anniversary, Dr. Jay decided on booking a weekend stay at Franschhoek Boutique Hotel. It is central and the deciding factor for booking was the fireplace in the room, so definitely a great winter spot.

On previous weekend trips this way out I’ve always stayed at more relaxed, self-catering establishments, so there are accommodation options for everyone.

For our anniversary weekend away, we were keeping it fancy…

On the Friday, before check-in, we stopped off at Babylonstoren for the day, doing a morning Garden Tour, Lunch at Babel and then a wine tasting to end off our afternoon. I will always love everything at Babylonstoren, it’s so beautiful – from the history of the farm, to the gardens and all its treasure, but most importantly the friendly staff. I’m also low-key obsessed with their monthly newsletter and fresh produce delivery service.

On the Saturday, we headed to Haute Cabriere for a MCC & Macaroon Pairing, followed by a Beer Tasting at Tuk Tuk Brewery and then a dinner at Protege Restaurant in the evening.

On Sunday morning after breakfast we checked out and took a stroll about the streets of Franschhoek, admiring sculptures, art, quaint little stores selling books, clothes, and trinkets, as well as the warm, buzzing restaurants and cafe’s.

Tastings

Wine, Beer & Bubbles

Of course the Franschhoek Valley is known for having some world renowned wine producers.

From Anthonij Rupert to Leopard’s Leap and several in between.

We opted for a tasting of Seven wines from the Babylonstoren range – at R110 p/p.

Lovely location, great wine, delicious snacks, and the interactive, sensory museum area is a real treat. Visit the museum at the entrance to the Babylonstoren Tasting Room, to your right. The self-guided tour is free to experience and open daily.

If wine ain’t your thing, worry not!

A bubbly tasting at the makers of the popular Pierre Jourdan MCC – Haute Cabriere might be more up your ally. We did the Pierre Jourdan Discovery Tasting at R110 p/p PLUS 3 Macaron Pairing at R40 p/p. This pairing is what they’re really known for, but you can also do wine tasting here or enjoy delightful treats from their bakery, or enjoy the restaurant’s magnificent views accompanied by a French menu with South African flair.

Bubbles not quite exciting you?

Tuk Tuk Microbrewery, found on the main road (14 Huguenot St) has a tasting of their house beers, with a laidback atmosphere and casual dining menu. I can’t remember exact pricing, but for two tasting trays and one side of samoosas + tip, we spent R240 only. Definitely recommend!

Food

As always, we do not skimp on our foodie experiences, so this time we booked at Babel for lunch on Friday and Protege for dinner on Saturday.

Other places we would have loved to visit, but did not get to include; Reuben’s, Epice and Orangerie at Le Lude.

Art all around

One of the best parts of this picture-perfect little town is its art. You can find over 20 art galleries and several other artistic avenues to explore.

We ventured into so many creatively expressive spaces and revelled in the many forms of artistic talent on display.

No small town is complete without a bookstore – and of course my visit to Franschhoek was not complete without a book purchased here.

Overall, ours was a perfect, colourful, romance filled weekend and yes, we’ll be back many more times in the future.

Colourful Kisses

Sherri
