Port Owen: The West Coast’s Quiet Little Secret

When people think “West Coast weekend,” the same favourites always seem to grab the spotlight – Langebaan, Darling, Yzerfontein, Paternoster. And yes, they’re beautiful. But tucked quietly along the Berg River is Port Owen in Velddrift, and honestly… this little marina village might be the real hidden gem of the West Coast.

This was my second visit, and once again Port Owen worked its magic. The vibe is unassuming and peaceful, with birdlife everywhere and long, quiet walks along the water. It’s the kind of place that invites you to breathe a little deeper.

Where I Ate & Explored

What I love most is how close Port Owen is to the major West Coast hotspots — only a short drive to Langebaan, Paternoster, Bokkom Laan, West Coast National Park and more. You get all the adventure without sacrificing the calm.

What to Do in Port Owen (Short Guide)

1. Explore the Marina

Walk along the waterways, watch the boats, and enjoy sunrise or sunset over the river.

2. Birdwatching

The Berg River Estuary is famous for its birdlife — ideal for photography or just slow, mindful moments.

3. Visit Bokkom Laan

Take a short drive to Velddrift’s iconic Bokkom Laan, where you’ll find Café spots, art corners, and local makers. It’s rustic, artsy, and full of old-West-Coast character. Be sure to check out:

4. Kayaking or Boat Cruises

Plenty of operators in Port Owen offer river adventures — great for spotting flamingos and other estuary birds.

5. Day Trips to Popular West Coast Towns

You’re perfectly placed to explore:

  • Langebaan (20–25 mins)

  • Paternoster (35–40 mins)

  • Yzerfontein (approx. 45 mins)

  • Darling (around 1 hour)

Sometimes the best places aren’t the loudest ones. Port Owen is that kind of place where you’re always finding something unexpected, but without the crowds and chaos. It might not shout for attention – but maybe that’s exactly why it steals your heart.
